DeForest, WI: DeForest Locally Grown 2016
DeForest Locally Grown is gearing up for another season of providing fresh local veggies to surrounding communities. We plan to open for the season the end of April. As in the past, Sunday’s email will announce the availability for the following Friday’s pick up from 3-5pm early and late season and 3-6pm June thru Sept, at Forest Run Farm. The Market is currently displaying most of the items that were offered during last season to give you an idea of what you can expect from this market. Deforest Locally Grown is a network of small farms that combine their products together in one market with a common pick up site. Most of the vegetables provided at this market are grown by Forest Run Farm. Sweet corn in season is provided by Ripp-N-Good Sweetcorn. Coffee is provided by Rusty Dog. And Meat is produced by Bauman’s Natural Meats. DeForest Locally Grown is looking for more growers or producers to provide to this market; if you know anyone that would be interested in selling cheese or bread, please let them know about this opportunity or have them contact [email protected].
Forest Run Farm offers a Farm Stand CSA which provides you with punch cards to use to purchase Forest Run Farm items from the on-line market. See more information HERE and find the sign up sheet HERE. Egg Shares can also be purchased by following THIS LINK. Use the egg sign up sheet with Bauman’s Natural Meats and choose 10 dozen (shown as Every Other Week) or 20 Dozen (shown as Every Week). By using a punch card, you will be able to choose which weeks you get eggs. You can order as many egg shares as you like along with your CSA share from Forest Run Farm.
This years pick up location will again be hosted by Forest Run Farm, 3757 Mueller Rd., DeForest. Due to the complexity of this market, we ask customers to be punctual and arrive before the designated closing time so that you can complete your transaction by the closing time. Ordering via this on-line market does require customers to set up a free account. With an account, you will receive weekly emails that announce the offerings of the week. Ordering begins Sunday and closes each Tues evening so that growers can pick and pack the orders by Friday. Customers can order as often as they wish depending on their needs. Farmers often have additional quantities of produce available at pick up for additional purchases or for walk-up customers.
Payment is to be made at pick up by cash, check or Farm Stand CSA punchcards. Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers and Farm Stand CSA punchcards are valid for Forest Run Farm produce only.

Your Orders Needed This Week
Including this week, there are just TWO Markets left before we close for good. PLEASE ORDER THIS WEEK to help support us until the end of the month. Last Market we barely raised enough delivery fees to pay for van rental. What to do after we close up? Be sure to “tune in” in two weeks for a list of recommended local resources for food and veggies.
Update on beef PRE-ORDERS
Unfortunately, when I arrived to pick up the beef in Land O’Lakes on Tuesday I was told that most of the beef was not available. It really isn’t their fault as recent family medical emergencies have eclipsed any new production. As a result, I had to take what they had on hand and go with that. As a result, several of you are not getting your PRE-ORDERS and will get a credit card refund from me via Stripe.com before the end of the week IF you paid for the beef by credit card when you purchased. Others will get a refund check with their next order (or I will mail it to you). My sincere regrets for the inconvenience this may have caused you.
Helpful Info on Market Produce and Product
- I’ve been doing research on Cuban oregano which grows in our backyard as it’s fragrance is SO pungent and enticing. I have found it to have medicinal uses as well as culinary. These facts were super interesting! According to Herbs: Cuban Oregano: Culinary, Medicinal Uses and Nutrition “Cuban oregano leaves also contains volatile oils which have two compounds of particular interest called thymol and carvacrol. Both natural compounds have antibacterial and antifungal properties, and were ingredients originally used in the mouthwash Listerine and also Gold Bond Powder.”
- I am always looking for new ways to cook the eggplant from our garden. I’ve been wanting to combine kaffir lime leaves & coconut milk into a recipe as I’ve never used them before. I believe I’ve found just the right recipe in Eggplant in a kaffir-lime scented coconut-milk curry Cannot wait to try it!
- I have yet to try eating katuk which is easily grown in Florida. There has been a little controversy on whether or not it truly it is safe to eat. With that said, this article on the Katuk Kontroversy didn’t make it sound too dangerous (to me) as long as you don’t exceed reality in your portions.
- I’ve been satisfying my craving for both hummus and collard greens by creating rollups! You may not know that the combination of chick peas and tahini makes a complete protein. I am loving this combo and can make ahead so I can grab and go. Here is my favorite hummus recipe done in my food processor. Simple: Mix 1 can of organic chickpeas (drained), 1/4 to 1/2 cup of tahini paste, 3 to 4 tablespoons of smoked paprika, 1 garlic clove, 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt, fresh ground pepper. If it’s too soupy then blend in another can of drained chickpease and nothing else. It’s perfect! I keep a bag of stripped collard leaves (or kale) right next to the hummus. I don’t refrigerate my hummus for the first few days as I like it room temp.
SPLG’S FRUIT BASKET
Starfruit aka carambolas & papayas (ripe & green!) locally grown in St. Pete.
ECONOMY SIZED PACKAGING
FRESH picked greens still in abundance this week: arugula, bok choy, broccoli greens, collard greens, Lacinato kale, Swiss chard, turmeric.
ON SALE THIS WEEK
Earthworm castings, ground beef, butter, honey, pork chorizo sausage, and turmeric.
KITCHEN GARDEN INTERNATIONAL
I thought this recipe posted on KGI’s website for “Nasturtium Butter” qualified for an honorable mention just because it’s looks so amazing! Now I have to start growing nasturtiums…
LOCAL HARVEST
This recent article on Local Harvest questions the reality of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to be implemented by 2018 and its impact on small farmers who gross more than $25K annually. “Safe Food or Regressive Regulations?” is worth a skim if you have an interest in supporting local Tampa Bay Area operations who want to invest in feeding us all. I am imagining that many local backyard urban farmers are going to become rock stars for the rest of us. We’ll be lining up to sing their praises!
MARKET MEMBERSHIP FEE is $10 if paid this month
If you have never ordered from us, you should know that the membership fee is $10 per month and doesn’t get charged until your SECOND order. Our Market Season is ending on March 31st when we close permanently.
Upcoming Events
WORKSHOPS & EVENTS
- FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER… we will hold our monthly social on the THIRD Saturday of the month instead of the Fourth. In fact, our NEXT & FINAL “SPLG Monthly Social” is scheduled for March 19th at Rosie’s home from 3 to 6pm. NO POTLUCK, just snacks if you wish. Please save the date! Evites with all details will go out soon for active customers, growers, and volunteers. Although these monthly socials will continue beyond March, they will no longer be sponsored by SPLG. In fact, our longest serving volunteer Rita Sewell will be taking over arranging them. Details on continuing to receive these invites after March will go out in a few weeks to those who have been attending regularly. I, for one, am grateful that they will continue!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

ALFN Local Food Club: The Market Is Open
ALFN Members,
The market is open! We have plenty of egg options including duck eggs, spinach galore, new cheeses, local baked goods and an assortment of meats. The market is already beginning to show signs of spring!
Updates
For those of you wanting to follow the local mishaps of chicken ordinance in Little Rock, a member of ALFN started a facebook page where everyone can begin to communicate and possibly organize. If anything, the page can provide conversation and knowledge-sharing among Little Rock chicken enthusiasts. Give ’em a like here: Little Rock Urban Chickens
ArkansasGives
Mark your calendar for April 7. From 8 AM to 8 PM Arkansans can give to their favorite non-profits. ALFN is on the list again for this year, and we are excited and thankful for the promotion ArkansasGives provides to statewide organizations. During this one-day event, each donation you give will help your favorite nonprofit organizations qualify for additional bonus dollars from Arkansas Community Foundation. All participating nonprofits will receive a portion of a pool of bonus dollars provided by Arkansas Community Foundation; the more a nonprofit raises, the more of the bonus dollars it will receive. We will have our own page during this event. Look for future email reminders! Last year, over 2 million dollars were given to non-profits after the one day event! You can also follow the twitter conversation here: ArkGives

CLG: Opening Bell: Lettuce, Eggs, Honey, Shiitake Mushrooms!
Good afternoon!
Can it be that our very mild winter is over, and spring gardens will be starting several weeks early? It looks that way now, so you will start to see vegetable PLANTS being listed. Be sure to read the description of the items you select. You may see a picture of Bell peppers, but the item name and description will tell you it is for Bell pepper PLANTS. I wish we had peppers in March, but we won’t see the summer vegetables until June. Until then, eat in season: sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, etc. Also, do your dogs EAT LOCAL like you do? Well, they can with the new item: GOURMET PREMIUM DOG FOOD. I brown some diced pork, then make a gravy with flour and water. Then I scoop the pork & gravy into a cupcake and freeze. Each order will receive a ziploc baggie with 3 frozen discs. Just set one out before you leave for work and when you get home, Sparky gets a wonderful treat. This will supplement their dry food diet. Limited amounts, so order now! And, money back guarantee if your pet doesn’t absolutely love it! :-)
See you on Friday!
Also, please check out this link for more information about the upcoming paint night fundraiser. They’ll be painting an awesome EAT LOCAL picture!
https://www.facebook.com/events/915844865196390/
Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)
The market is now OPEN for orders. Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!
Have a great week!
