Old99Farm Market: Old 99 Farm, week of Oct 30 2016
We had a wonderful dinner yesterday, all raised here: rack of lamb, baked Potato, sour cream and chives, carrots, chard and fresh apple cider. I should have taken a picture! In fact we were talking about how to encourage more of the 200 of you who subscribe to this blog to try sourcing some of your food here. A gallery of sumptuous meals, nutritious too, raised here, might be a start!
This week, we continue to offer a long list of fresh vegetables, meats, eggs: swiss chard, eggplant, beet root, beet tops, green onions, leek, rhubarb, kale, arugula, tomatoes including cherry and beefsteak, carrots, sweet potato, potatoes (russet, dakota and purple), garlic, and herbs: chives, dill, spearmint, bronze fennel and lovage… and lamb, chicken, and eggs.
Still some seats available for the Natural Cheesemaking workshop Nov 12-13 and lecture by cheesemaker David Asher Fri Nov 11 pm.
Healthy eating,

CSA Farmers Market: Older Market News
What is New at the Market
Changes are always happening here at CSA Farmers Market. Sometimes we get so darned busy that we cannot keep everyone updated.
Last week I attended the “Better Process Control” school in Lansing. It is a required schooling if we are ever to move beyond freezing and dehydrating and into canning some of the produce that we grow.
We had some electrical work done at White Pine Farm where the center of CSA Farmers Market is located. We now have enough power to hook up and operate a walk-in freezer. We anticipate a new freezer repairman and installer to stop by any day and give us some suggestions about the repair of the existing freezer or if it is not repairable we may have to purchase a new or nearly new one.
Rochester’s Out Doors Farmers Market is closed, where we have been attending this summer, although they are having an indoor market in the fire station. We have not committed to attending that market, possibly in the future we may, but for right now since it has been a challenging growing year we need a break.
Racheal our creative cook has had a family emergency that has required her to focus on other things and I have been trying to fill her shoes and pick up where she left off. We have some other creative cooks that may become involved and help us make new products in our licensed kitchen.
We have had many local customers in the North Branch and surrounding areas that would like us to have a little store front on the farm, so we have been exploring that and plan in the near future to have that happen.
Green Earth Grocery is permanently closing soon, rather than to have customers that enjoyed what Green Earth had to offer some of the employees from Green Earth will be helping with a booth starting in January at the indoor Davison Farmers Market. Products there would include local organic that CSA Farmers Market has as well as many of the unique items Green Earth used to carry.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS
I am beyond thrilled to find these wine bottles! My dear mother who passed away last January worked at the LaSalle Winery in Farmington, Mi, in the 1940s. She often spoke of working there where there was always an open bottle of wine in the ladies room for sampling if you wished. This will be an awesome birthday gift for my sister this month! Thank you, and I’m also glad to help you attain your goal for the walk-in Freezer! Tamara Meier
Yumm! Tomato Soup Powder Mix was good. Louis Kasl
We are so pleased with the splendid variety and fine quality of the food you offer. A minimum of 80% of the food we consume comes from this CSA. The percentage goes down a bit in the winter, but our meat/poultry/fish supply lasts through the winter. So does our supply of shallots, which hold well. Last year, we continued to order your apples all through the winter for eating freshly sliced, for apple crisps, and for luscious apple pie omelets. Thanks to all the farmers.

We LOVE suggestions and feed back!
Feedback helps us to improve! We need to hear the good “warm fuzzy” feedback, BUT we also need to hear the: "Hey what’s up with this?” kind of feedback. One customer pointed out to us that some of our tomatoes were not as flavorful as they had been in past years. The weather plays its part in how tasty the tomatoes are and also the way we handle them contributes. As a result of the feedback we no longer allow the tomatoes in the cooler and we now pack them separately in the morning.
Thanks for the feedback, it helps us and you!

…a few notes…
Ancient Awakenings has fermented offerings this week. Next availability will be December 1st!
My Daily Bread has their yummy offerings on the Market this week. Dabrielle has set aside time and resources to bake for our Market on a weekly basis. If we are not able to make a minimum amount, it is not financially sustainable for My Daily Bread and we will lose our place in getting our orders filled. Check out their Organic Bakery items and get your orders placed before Market close!
Doug’s Garden has listed Sweet Potato Leaves, Assorted Sweet Potatoes, Butternut Squash and his wonderful Herb Lovers Box!
Fry Farm has items listed on the Market this week.
Butternut Squash
North Georgia Candy Roaster Squash
Wild Garden Kale Mix
Lettuce ‘Wild Summer Mix’
French Breakfast Radishes
Hakurei Turnips (with or without greens)
Hinona Kabu Turnips
Pre-Orders for Holiday Meats! Hams, Turkeys, Turkey Breasts are all available from the Hutchins Family of Heritage Farm! These options will NOT be available for long and are only available as Pre-Orders! Don’t miss this great opportunity!
Greg is using a new meat processor! Don’t miss the opportunity to check out all of the new Sausages:
Bratwurst (on Sale this week!)
Bratwurst Jalepeno and Cheese links
Chirizo
Irish Bangers
German style Frankfurter
Sweet Italian Sausage
Cajun Sausage
Polish Sausage
Bacon is on sale!. This Bacon is NOT as thick as we have been getting! I prefer a medium to thin sliced Bacon and this one works for me!
Heritage Farm also has some Produce listed:
Watermelon Radishes
Okra (sold out)
Apples (these are wonderful!!)
Eggs
As of this writing all Eggs are Sold Out! I have contacted our Farmers and have asked that extra be sent if they are available. This is ONE example of the result of inconsistent ordering! The amount of Eggs that we were ordering dropped dramatically. Chickens were still laying Eggs – Farmers need to sell those Eggs (or Milk or Meat or Veggies or Baked Goods) – if we cannot support them, someone else will! When I send the reminder email on Thursday, I will let each Market know how many Eggs will be available on Table Sales! They will be sold on a First Come, First Served basis only!
Cow Milk and Goat Milk
For those of you who order Raw Cow MILK, (for your Pets!) Sam makes a 375 mile round trip to ensure that we have fresh milk. Our milk orders are down drastically from last year and this is becoming a burden to Sam. Financially it is not sustainable. In lieu losing this wonderful product and resource permanently, we are discussing going to an every other week delivery. Cows do not stop giving milk because our orders are down – consistency in ordering is important!
Goat Milk will NOT be available until December! Some folks who ordered Goat Milk last week did not get their order. Usually Rusty of Little Tots Estate systematically dries out the Does before they ‘kid’ (give birth) in both the Fall and Spring. The Mamas and Mother Nature did not afford him that control this time around. Whether this is due to the dry weather we have had or other factors, Rusty cannot say – but the result is — no Goat Milk until after the Does have their babies! I will keep you informed!
