Market News

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I’ve known many hard working laborers in my day, but probably none that work harder than our farmers. Please send a few extra thanks their way next time you’re able.

I’ll be out of state this week, attending the XOXO conference in Portland, Oregon. XOXO is an experimental festival for independent artists and creators who work on the internet, and I’ve been wanting g to go for ages. I’m able to attend in large part because I wrote all the software behind Athens Locally Grown, software that’s now in use by markets all across the country. Some of my creative inspirations will be there, people I’ve only known across the internet, and I’m really looking forward to the whole thing. I’ll be leaving pickups on Thursday in the capable hands of our regular volunteers. If you have questions they can’t answer or problems they can’t solve, just drop me an email and I’ll get right back to you.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has returned to Saturday mornings at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons at Creature Comforts downtown. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market has returned, and you can catch the details on their website here: www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running Saturdays from 9 to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. The city of Monroe has a downtown market on Saturdays, 8:30 to 12:30, and you can learn more here: www.monroedowntown.com/events/monroe-farmers-market. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for September 2nd

Market News

Hello!

Happy hot September to you, and happy Labor Day weekend as well.

We’ve got everything this week! Summer tomatoes and melons, peppers and okra, lots of greens, and winter squashes! Try something new this week – a new variety of winter squash, or an Asian Green, and take the time to roast some peppers to freeze for winter!

The watermelons are small this week, but are really sweet, so you may want more than one!

Flowers are back – it’s a fresh crop of zinnias which will cheer up any table. So treat yourself this week and enjoy all the good things we farmers, meat producers, and small business owners have to offer!

You have until Tuesday night to place your order!

Thanks for your support, and we will see you on Wednesday!

Stones River Market:  Welcome September - Market is Open

I am happy to see September, I know it is not technically Fall for several weeks but to me Fall is here. Colors are slowly changing and temperature are falling!

Several ‘fall’ produce are arriving on the market, find winter varieties of squash, second crops of summer squash, cooler season items will soon follow.

Some news from our Growers:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: This is the time of year when the perennial garden becomes rather boring, if you don’t take special effort to brighten it up a bit. It’s easy to find bright and cheerful perennials in the spring, in full bloom. But as the summer wears on, and the heat gets on all our nerves, most perennials also lose their enthusiasm and fade into the background. Not so the hardy species begonias, the beautiful blue plumbago, and the creeping rosemary. The first two prefer part to full shade, where they will really liven up the garden in early fall. The creeping rosemary may not be fully hardy in this area but is definitely worth trying if you can locate it in a sunny, well drained, and protected area, such as against the south foundation of your home. All three of these beauties are available in good numbers from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse for the next couple of weeks. Linda

Erdmann Farm: is back this week with red and green okra and Ghost HOT Peppers.

Flying S Farms: Our fall crop of Summer Squash is coming in, Yellow Straight Neck is available this week with Zucchini and Zephyrs to follow next week. Also Big Beef tomatoes are in and Sweet Peppers are beginning to change in color which makes them sweeter! Several varieties of HOT peppers are also coming in.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.
