Berea Gardens:  Market open

This week’s market finds us in a brief lull between spring and summer crops and our selection is a little slim, but we still have some good things for you.

After many requests, I convinced Lynnita to do some baking this week to add to our variety for you. Her 10 Multi-grain/seed bread is famous in this area.

Tom McColley, Kenny Point and Melody Urbanic will be here again this week with more of their goodness too! Hope to see you Wednesday.

Blessings,
Bob

Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #15

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Arugula, Muir Head Lettuce, Beets, Kale, Squash, White Icicle Raddish, Dill and Basil. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

Our gentle, doting Spring seems to be giving way to a full on, hot and tropical Kentucky Summer. This is the time of year where we begin to see the bold summer vegetables. Cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes will all be in bags soon. Despite the great potential for bounty, this time of year comes with significant challenges. Irrigation becomes critical, plant maintenance demands are at their peak, planting new crops continues, and working in the heat is just straightforwardly more difficult. Some adaptive measures the team is taking are shifting work to dawn and dusk, staying well hydrated, and wearing good sun hats.

For those of you feeling up to braving the heat, Murray’s Farmers’ Market is in full swing and Paducah’s will begin this Saturday (June 13th). We appreciate those of you who come out to support the local farmers’ market scene, especially with the complications added by COVID-19 this year. Of course, CSA remains our priority. With the weather becoming hot, you may want to consider leaving a cooler out with an ice pack or two if you are not at home during our delivery time. Many customers do this to good effect, the high-top cube coolers work very well for how we pack CSA bags. We always want you to be able to receive your vegetables at their peak freshness.

In mindfulness of seasonal eating, today’s featured vegetable is the zucchini. The plants are at their happiest during this hot bright weather just before summer solstice. Technically, the zucchini (or courgette, as some Europeans know it) is a part of the “summer squash” group. Zucchini tend to be straighter and firmer textured than what we call a “squash” but there is little objective distinction. Zucchini is very versatile, being excellent sautéed, stir fried, grilled, roasted, in breads, or made into “zoodles” as a pasta substitute. They can even be cubed and frozen for use in soups later. Nutritionally zucchini are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, and fiber. Currently we are growing a traditional green, a yellow variety, and an Italian heirloom called ‘Cocozelle’ that is striped green. We’re already forming some opinions in our test kitchen, but we’d love to hear what you think about each of them!

As always, we are so grateful for your support of our farm. We appreciate your patience as we’ve grown and your understanding in times we’ve erred. We are always striving to improve and deliver the fresh bounty of our certified Organic farm to your doorstep each week.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

News from Our Growers:

RnR Farms: we are cranking out the lettuce even as the weather turns warm. We have a huge selection of all types of lettuces: green and red leaf, romaine, butterhead, and even some kale. And we are in the middle of salad week on our Facebook page https://facebook.com/rnrfarmstn where we are sharing tips and recipes for all things lettuce!

Here is one of our delicious recipe…Southwest Chicken Salad

1 bag RnR Farms Red Leaf
1-2 grilled chicken breast
1/2 can of corn (drained)
1/2 can of Black beans (drained)
1 cup of grape tomatoes (halved)
1 Cucumber (peeled and sliced)
3 oz. Shredded cheese
Avocado and tortilla strips, optional

Directions:
Assemble salad and use a 1:1 ratio of ranch and your favorite barbecue sauce. Enjoy!

Note: I like to quickly marinate chicken breasts before I grill them. Marinate for 15-30 minutes with 1/4 cup olive oil, a heavy splash of apple cider vinegar, and salt and pepper to your liking.

Carole’s Herbs (CS3Farm): We have early Romaine lettuce, chicory, and microgreens, as well as our delicious nutrient-dense Farmed and Foraged Greens. We also have herbal honey, gourmet mustard, and herbal teas for what ails you!

Green romaine and curly lettuce is coming in strong, as is our chicory! We have chicory leaf, which has a unique, bitter taste that adds a special “kick” to salads, sandwiches, and many other meals. Our bodies need bitter for digestion and other functions, so why not try some that is nutritious?

Add nutrition, texture, and taste to your salad or sandwich with Mustard, Kale, and Turnip Microgreens. There’s just the right amount of bite to get your taste buds’ attention! Microgreens have much higher nutrient levels than the full grown veggies, and work well adding to smoothies, salads, or baked dishes.

You will love our Farmed and Foraged greens. This blend is a great tame & wild hybrid salad complement or substitute, it’s awesome on sandwiches, and it is quite delicious topping a burger or other sandwich. If you tried forage greens you will appreciate the tasty, nutrient dense, blend that will either replace or complement your salad.

Nom Noms Dog Treats: Want to share with you the new additions to our menu. We have new treats size and a new treat flavor.

Now offering the Bite Size mini treat for those small doggies and training treats for pups.

The new flavor is Peanut Butter Banana. We have always made this treat however it is now made with flour instead of oats.

Short Mountain Cultures: Some of our Short Mountain Cultures favorites are back in stock this week! Our kimchi is made with locally grown napa cabbage, purple daikon radishes, green onions, ginger and our chili garlic sauce. ABC tempeh has also returned! Organic adzuki beans, black beans, chickpeas and millet make this delicious soy-free, protein rich tempeh! Our cold and bubbly water kefir and kombucha are also particularly refreshing as the weather heats up! Available by the bottle or half gallon jug (by the way, we take this back to reuse)!

Wedge Oak Farm: New this week: Peach and Fig Fried Pie Filling and Jam….This pie filling and jam is packed with fresh peaches! It also has dried figs that have been soaked in brandy (don’t worry, the brandy cooks off during the long cook time).

Flying S Farms: Red Stem Kale, Swiss Chard, Large head Cabbage, Hakurei Turnips, Salad and Candy Onions, Sour Dough Breads and Friendships Breads

Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday June 10th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you.

Thank you for your continued support of our local farmers. We count it a privilege to serve you!

CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK

ASsembling a list of Market Superfoods turned out to have so much great information that it was too much for one newsletter. Here’s hoping this will benefit you in your quest for tasty and healthy nutrition! All of these foods may be found on our Market Page. Last week’s list of superfoods may be found on the Weblog.

1. Garlic and Onions Contribute to Healthy Blood Pressure Levels

onions

They may be pungent (some even bring us to tears), but allium vegetables — chives, onions, garlic, leeks, and the like — deliver potent health benefits. Plus, they’re delicious. Once used to ward off the evil eye, garlic also has antibacterial and antiviral properties, according to an April 2018 Scientific Reports article.
Studies have found allium vegetables may play a role in preventing cancer, and garlic in particular may benefit people living with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. (August 2019 Food Science and Nutrition meta-analysis)

2. Dark, Leafy Greens May Play a Role in Preventing Colorectal Cancer

leafy-greens

Generally, nutritionists say the darker the color of a vegetable, the more nutrients it contains. Dark, leafy greens like arugula, kale, collard greens, spinach, lettuce, and Swiss chard get their vibrant colors from chlorophyll, which keeps plants healthy, and the dietary fiber found in dark greens can decrease the risk of colorectal cancer, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Carotenoids, another type of plant pigment, also act as antioxidants that fight off potentially cancer-causing free radicals in the body, notes Harvard Medical School.

3. Tomatoes

tomatoes

Whether you prefer them in salads or on top of pasta, tomatoes are loaded with lycopene, a plant nutrient that gives tomatoes their red color. Lycopene has been linked to many benefits, like keeping your heart healthy and protecting against strokes. A study published in Neurology found that middle-aged men with a high amount of lycopene in their blood had a 55% lower chance of having a stroke.

4, 5, 6, 7 . . . this is a LONG list! and one of the things we found in researching this is that there are a LOT of superfoods that Market at Dothan carries or has carried at some point. Because we are Fresh, Local, and Year Round different foods are available at different times during the year. Like CITRUS – citrus foods are usually available late fall and winter. Right now we offer a limited amount of ROOT VEGETABLES like beets and carrots while there are plenty other times of the year. Mayim Farm lists fresh TUMERIC after it’s yearly harvest and various ANCIENT GRAINS as they are available.

So don’t be surprised if you see more superfood highlights going forward.

MARKET CHITCHAT

A big THANK YOU to everyone who ordered last week. We’ve come to realize that the first week of every month is a bit bumpier than usual so we’re especially grateful for your patience and understanding.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New & Relisted – some from last week in case you missed it!
Blueberries from Casablanca Farm
Kissed by the Sun Goats Milk Soap – Bella Eden Farms
Cowhorn Okra- Sandy Valley
Supersweet Cherry Tomatoes from Restoration Gardens
Tokyo Bekana Greens – Avalon Farms
5 lb bulk Zucchini- Restoration Gardens
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Where’s Everybody At? If you noticed several vendors missing last week you are right! Just like you our farmer’s have life situations where they sometimes have to take a week off. Smith Farms had a WEDDING. Horton’s Farm had to tend to family business upstate, and Mayim is most likely out of town teaching sustainable agriculture.

GROWER NOTES

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

SANDY VALLEY Scotty sends his apologies to everyone who didn’t get their order of COWHORN OKRA on Friday. He said it was very frustrating to see hundreds of 1 inch okras on the stem not grow because the sun didn’t come out all week. So the okra is relisted in the same quantities trusting that we’ll get enough sun next week for it to develop.

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.

I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.

II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION
It takes all of us working together to keep everything running & everyone safe!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

CLG:  Opening Bell: Salad Mix, Potatoes, Squash, Honey!

Good afternoon!
How about that extras table Friday! It’s not even officially summer yet, and we already have squash, zucchini, garlic and cucumbers. Each week will see new items available to order online and on the extra table. Like many other places, we have been experiencing a meat shortage. Pork has been added, and chicken options should be available very soon. Ratchford Farm has some beef listed. They are working hard to provide top quality meat during this difficult time.

New Grower! We are pleased to announce that Shaky K Farm has been added as a grower for our market. Read about them under the tab: our growers. They are a family farm in Bee Branch, just up the road. Billianne and her crew have earned a great reputation in the area for producing nutritious food the natural way. The first item they are offering is whole chickens!

If you are like me, and one could only hope they are, your garden is a special place of peace and refuge, where your senses are treated to the best of Nature. Our eyes see the colorful flowers and intricate plants. With our ears, we hear the wind chimes and leaves rustling. But what of the nose? We bend in to smell flowers to enjoy their sweet aroma, but what if there was a way for larger areas of your garden to emit a scent that would
set your mind at ease and lift the soul? Good news! Holy basil is a vigorous annual that has a very soothing aura carried easily on a slight breeze. You can experience it yourself to fully understand what it adds to a garden. Plants now available.

Our market will continue to meet in the lobby every Friday. Our volunteers will be wearing masks. Your order can be brought to your car in the parking lot by one of our dedicated volunteers. Just text me when you are parked, and we will bring your order to your vehicle. 501-339-1039.

Let’s do this again: Authentic Tamales!
Pork, chicken or jalapeño & cheese.
Five for $7.
At market this Friday, June 12th.
Text me your order.
501–339-1039

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Four instance, type in the word “sale” and see what pops up. We have over 350 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thanks!
