Locally Grown STT: Summer Seasonal Shopping 2020
Hello from the market coordinators of the St. Thomas Locally Grown Farmers Market. Market is currently open for orders and closes on Tuesdays at 5 PM.
Welcome to the new growers that joined this week and to the new customers trying out the market for the first time. We aim to make this smooth and easy to buy local and seasonal from your local farms on the market.
Here’s what’s available this week.
McColloms Market: June FFFN Market Now Closed
Hi All:
The Market is now closed. Curbside pick up will be this Friday at 4:30 onward.
My plan is to package up and label all of the orders and place them on my front porch so that noone will have to deal with touching door knobs, etc. I’ll be wearing gloves and a mask when I do the packaging. I’ll also mark what you owe on your order and leave an envelope for your payment.
Have a good week.
Thanks so much.
Best,
Melinda

Growing Together : Offerings for June 13th Pick Up
Another week is upon us! Despite the summer heat of the last few weeks, the farmers are working hard to keep the spring crops healthy and looking good for you! We are nearing the end of cold weather crops, so be sure to order your fill of mustard greens, radishes, kales, and arugula before they are gone!
We’ve also still got great looking cabbage coming in as well as a new planting of lettuces, so be sure to check those out. Also, the first of the cipollini onions are coming in!! These are delicious fresh onions with a higher sugar content than a typical onion which makes them perfect for caramelizing or roasting whole!
As always, please let us know if you have any questions about any products or your account.
We are so grateful for your support!

As the weather has become warmer we would like to remind everyone that produce is affected by the heat. Please make sure when you pick up your order to take it right home so it can be stored in proper temps. If it sits in the car for any amount of time the heat will decrease it’s freshness and longevity. Here are some tips for washing/storing fruit and produce:
Lettuce or greens should be rinsed or soaked in cold water to help them crisp up. Use a large clean bowl or clean/disinfect your kitchen sink and fill with cold water. Add the lettuce/greens to the water and allow to them to refresh and become crisp again. Most of the garden soil should fall to the bottom of bowl or sink. Rinse off any remaining soil and spin dry or lay on towels or paper towels to dry before storing in refrigerator.
Root vegetables: Trim tops from all veggies and set aside. Soak them in water and use a veggie brush to scrub off any soil. Allow them to dry before storing. Root greens are edible. You can use carrot tops to make pesto, or add beet or radish greens to salads. Using every part of your food is not only healthy but it’s also a no waste approach that helps you get more for your money.
Please wash blueberries only when you’re ready to eat them. You can safely store them in the fridge in the container they come in when purchased. To freeze blueberries, lay them on a cookie sheet and freeze individually, then put them in a freezer bag. This will keep them from sticking together and allow you to only pour what you need out of the bag.
Stawberries:
Step 1: Mix one part vinegar with 10 parts water.
Step 2: Soak your strawberries for 2 Minutes.
Step 3: Drain the strawberries.
Step 4: Set them out to dry for about 20 minutes (I put them on paper towels)
Step 5: Put them back in a container and store in refrigerator.
Enjoy shopping this week and see you Saturday!

From Carter at CS3 Farms
We have early Romaine lettuce, chicory, and microgreens, as well as our delicious nutrient-dense Farmed and Foraged Greens. We also have herbal honey, gourmet mustard, and herbal teas for what ails you!
Green romaine and curly lettuce are coming in strong, as is our chicory! We have chicory leaf, which has a unique, bitter taste that adds a special “kick” to salads, sandwiches, and many other meals. Our bodies need bitter for digestion and other functions, so why not try some that is nutritious?
Add nutrition, texture, and taste to your salad or sandwich with Mustard, Kale, and Turnip Microgreens. There’s just the right amount of bite to get your taste buds’ attention! Microgreens have much higher nutrient levels than the full grown veggies, and work well adding to smoothies, salads, or baked dishes.
You will love our Farmed and Foraged greens. This blend is a great tame & wild hybrid salad complement or substitute, it’s awesome on sandwiches, and it is quite delicious topping a burger or other sandwich. If you tried forage greens you will appreciate the tasty, nutrient dense, blend that will either replace or complement your salad.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:
The greenhouses are emptying out this spring, but we still have a few beautiful items for shade: astilbes, native begonias, coral bells, and several ferns. And for sun or part sun: balloon flowers, daylilies, Euphorbia, Geraniums (Cranesbill), Sedum, Shasta Daisy, and Stokesia Asters.
We are currently sold out of elderberry bushes, but will be glad to dig more. If you would like some, let us know how many so we will dig enough.
Keep an eye on the Houseplant section – we’ll be adding a few within a couple of weeks. They’ll be happy on the porch this summer, as long as you remember to bring them inside in late September. Most houseplants don’t like temperatures lower than 50 degrees at night.

Old99Farm Market: Week of June 7th 2020
Hello everyone, we hope you’re enjoying the nice weather as much as the plants and animals are. It’s been perfect for cutting hay last week. We will be bailing hay tomorrow afternoon and could really use some amazing helping hands with it.
We have a good amount of rhubarb available and asparagus is going well. Salad greens, swiss chard, collards, lots of kale, mint, and much more.
Don’t forget to order your farm fresh eggs, beef, pork and stewing hens.
We have put The Egg Mobile and the Broiler Sled back into operation and the birds are settling nicely into the pasture.
Reminder that orders are due by midnight on Wednesday. Pick up times are 3 PM to 6 PM Thursdays and Fridays. We appreciate you supporting local and have a wonderful week.
Be well,
Nick & Angela.
Old99Farm Market: Old 99 farm, Hay season comes early
Would be wonderful if any of you can come by the farm Monday June 8th or Tuesday 9th to help bring some hay in from the field to the barn. With lots of hands it’s fun and barely break a sweat.
We’ll start monday afternoon so if you have an hour or two, we will greatly appreciate your coming by.
It helps me plan if you send an email confirming that you are available. We’re keeping covid distancing in mind and will supply masks if you request.
Thanks in advance,
Ian and Cami
Athens Locally Grown: ALG CLOSED But Will Reopen Next Week (Promise)
Hello!
Thank you everyone for your feedback on the options we had for new locations, but the temporary place out by the airport and the potentially permanent new home on Tallassee Road. I really appreciated the many thoughtful comments you gave me.
I’d been figuring out the logistics for moving everything over to the airport. It was doable, though just barely. A number of you said it was much more inconvenient, but you’d be willing to drive over there anyway. At the last moment, though, just this weekend, I got the news that we can move into the Tallassee space next week.
And that changed everything. It would have been a huge endeavor to clean out the airport space, move everything in, and then take it all back down and move it again next week, so I decided to just keep things on hold one last week.
Our new space, starting on June 18, will be at 580 Tallassee Rd. Athens, GA 30606. If you’re coming off the loop or Mitchell Bridge or Oglethorpe, head right up Tallassee Rd, just a bit past the Whitehead roundabout, and we’ll be on the right hand side. There’s a turn lane, and we’ll have signs out. It’s where the Double Helix STEAM school has been, if you’re familiar with their great work.
I expect to keep as much of the system we finely honed while at the YMCA and continue the contactless loading right into your car as you drive through the looped driveway. I’ll keep the hourly slots, though of course you can change yours if your earlier choice is no longer best.
I’m excited by the potential the new space offers, both for us and the sustainable community as a whole!
In the meantime, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comedian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. Dawson Farms has been contacting their regular milk customers to offer alternative pickups. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. It’s not anything like it was before, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back too, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.
Also, the local restaurants are starting to staff up again, open their doors, and offer more options for takeout. If you’re so inclined, can I suggest spending some money at Damunchiezz, Dawg Gone Good Barbeque, Food for the Soul, JR Crickets, Kelly’s Jamaican Food, Lil Ice Cream Dude, Mannaweenta, Rashe’s Jamaican Cuisine, Weaver D’s, and/or the Barnett Shoals African and Asian grocery?
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you NEXT WEEK at 580 Tallassee Rd!
