Martin's Farmstand:  U-pick Strawberries starting in about 10 days

The strawberry plants have lots of green berries on them and are sizing now. I expect harvest to start in about 10 days give or take a bit. We will be open for u-pick when that time comes. I will write again in a few days with more strawberry u-pick details.
The asparagus is abundant at the moment. Now is the time to get your fill as asparagus season will be ending early next week.Lettuce and scallions are also plenty.
It does not look like we will have beef beyond a tiny bit of stock that was left from last fall at the stand at least during the early part of the summer because it appears that the few USDA plants are doing processing for small farms are booked full into next year. (another example of regulations helping to crush small farms).
We butchered several beefs early this spring and we have several hundred lbs of hamburger beyond what we need for our own table. This is available from us privately (not at the stand) It is not approved for human consumption by the government but would be good for pet food etc. I would like a $4 per lb donation to help cover the costs of growing these animals.

The fields are very dry here. The rain in the past weeks has been very hit or miss in the area and for us it has been miss. From March 1st till now we have had a total of 3.1 inches of rain. (25% of average) Irrigation is the difference between crop failure and not with these local semi arid conditions. Just a few miles away toward Parishville it has given near 4 inches just in May alone. Our irrigation ponds are alarmingly low and this is still June. Pray for rain for those of us that need it.. Daniel

Market News

Happy Tuesday! We are opening a little earlier this week, by request of many customers. Let us know what you think about the earlier opening time.
This week we are excited to welcome two new vendors to Big Canoe Harvest.
The Flip Farm is located in Stone Mountain, Georgia and specializes in turning previously unutilized suburban yards as fertile farmland. This week they are bringing us the first summer zucchini and some delicious tender collards.
Some of you may be familiar with our other new vendor this week, Talking Rock HoneyBee Farm. In addition to harvesting honey from the bees at their farm in Talking Rock, they also partner with Gibbs Gardens, where they produce some hyper-local raw honey that is VERY popular with visitors. They also have chicken eggs this week, and they tell us they will have duck and turkey eggs in the future.
Twisted Pastry is back from vacation this week, with their super yummy deserts and quick breads. If you haven’t tried their Banana Pudding yet, you are missing out!
Connie’s Cornucopia is excited to announce that their salad mix containers are now made of USDA certified, plant-based compostable material made in the US. Their natural, sustainable methods of seed-to-seal food production brings you high quality, fresh taste, and real nutrition. Among their delicious greens this week, they also have Cucumbers! Summer is just getting started here at Big Canoe Harvest!
Loud Mouth Farms has Blue Oysters and Cinnamon Caps this week, as well as the Farm Mix. We LOVE the Farm Mix here at Big Canoe Harvest, because we get excited about the different varieties. If you haven’t tried their mushrooms yet (or especially if you have!) add some of their products to your shopping cart this week.
Tumble Tree Farm brings delicious Zephyr Summer Squash this week, as well as an assortment of delicious fresh herbs like parsley, dill, cilantro, and basil. As always, their microgreens are perfect for sprucing up salads, sandwiches, and pretty much anything else you add them to.
We’re hearing whispers that we might have tomatoes next week, so keep your eyes peeled!
As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.
Have a wonderful week, and we’ll see you Saturday!
Whitney and Eddy

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Champaign, OH:  Dear Prudence

The sun is up, the sky is blue
It’s beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play?
(The Beatles)

I’ve had all of my Beatles vinyl out, lately, playing them on my little turntable, listening, taking the love that they put out, admiring the peace messages…

This is from their White album, of which I picked mine up, way back in the early 80s, in an obscure little dingy, barely lit basement record shop, in downtown Lexington, right beside a little thrift shop that clothed me, during college days, and supplied me with the most exquisite 50s style prom dresses that I would gather up, and made a community trunk for all of my sorority sisters, for each of us to pick from and share, for the different formals we attended.

Spinning this album always brings me back to those days, and how I was always the dress girl of cool vintage finds.

Not much has changed, and the best part? All of those sorority sisters are still a HUGE part of my life. After all these years. When bonds are strong, and built on love, they will remain.

This market is like that, to me…the bonds, the ties, the pride, the love. I hope that it brings the same, to you, each and every week.

And, I hope that you take each of these little snippets of songs, and piece together your own treasure trunk of memories…

The market will close, this evening, at 8pm, for the week! Don’t forget to get those orders in…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
