Growing Together :  Offerings for June 20th Pick Up

We hope you all have been enjoying this cool June weather! The farmers are loving it!

We do still have some remaining cool weather crops in the field – bok choy, komatsuna, carrots, beets, herbs, and more! We’re also seeing some of the summer veggies trickle in this week – the first summer squashes and zucchinis, and several varieties of basil! If you haven’t already tried Sumitra’s edible flower mix, it’s a great way to add some pizzaz and color to salads or other dishes you’re creating!

If you have been enjoying your vegetables from Growing Together, we’d love for you to consider purchasing a Fall CSA share! The Fall CSA runs for 8 weeks and is a way to support a Growing Together farmer by providing an upfront investment in their work. In return, each customer gets a share of the farmer’s vegetables each week during the CSA season. Check out our website for more information about the Fall CSA.

We are so grateful for your support!

Locally Grown STT:  Welcome new growers to the market!

The market is open!

Just a reminder, ordering is only enabled Saturdays to Tuesdays. You may have had the experience of trying to order and the cart feature not being there. That’s mostly because one may have tried ordering on a closed day. Make sure to place your order on open days.

Thanks for shopping on the online farmers market. The growers are happy to have another way to make their product/produce available for you and to make it easier for them to get it to you.

We hope you are enjoying the experience and continue to grow with us as we grow for you!

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!

https://siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

Good morning!

Opossum Hollow has restocked their selection of beef and Vandevoir Farms has restocked all chicken products!

Be sure to check out the artwork, wreaths, and aprons available.

Tajour Specialty Products offers gourmet mustards that pair well with brats.

Be sure to get your blueberries this week.

It’s summer and the bugs are such a nuisance. Create 4 Good and Gardens by You and Me both offer all natural bug repellant!

Due to the current concerns with COVID-19 and the recent spike in cases we have implemented a specific process for picking up orders to continue to provide limited contact:

1. If you need to pay for your order at the market please prepare it before you arrive by putting the exact amount of cash or a check payable to Main Street Siloam Springs in an envelope with your name on it. If you are paying with SNAP market staff will process your transaction when your order is brought to you. If you paid online, thank you and your payment will be processed at the close of market. If you are paying with Senior Vouchers please leave a comment for the market when you check out. The process for using these for payment needs to be communicated to you and market staff and we want to make sure and have your Double Dollars ready so you can use them for future purchases.

2. If you walk to the market pick up location we now have a table that will be set up where we will bring your order.

3. For those who drive to the market pick up location – No need to text any longer. There will be someone at the driveway entrance to take your name and assign you to a numbered parking spot. Market staff will be using radios to communicate and deliver orders to you in your vehicle.

4. The Arkansas Health Department advises everyone to wear a mask in situations where you are unable to maintain 6 foot social distancing. Market staff will be wearing masks to deliver orders to customers.

Market News

We’re back! I’ve sure missed you, but I bet you’ve missed the wonderful food from all our producers even more. I think it’s been at least fifteen years since we’ve been closed three weeks in a row, and I’m hoping it’ll be the last time that happens.

We’re trying out a new location on Tallassee Rd, and it has potential to be our new permanent home. We plan on operating pretty much exactly without the system we honed during our time at the YMCA, where we’ll have your items waiting for you and we’ll load them into your car as you drive on through. There’s a nice scenic driveway loop through the woods that goes past the old farmhouse that recently housed the Double Helix STEAM school. We’ll have signs at the road so you’ll know where to turn (there’s even a turn lane for you) and people to guide you where to go.

The address is 580 Tallassee Rd. Athens, GA 30606, a short distance off the loop. If you’re coming off the loop or Mitchell Bridge or Oglethorpe, head right up Tallassee Rd, just a bit past the Whitehead roundabout, and we’ll be on the right hand side. If the Oglethorpe/Tallassee/Mitchell Bridge intersection is daunting, come up Prince, continue onto Jefferson Hwy, and turn left at Whitehead Rd and take that o he roundabout and turn right. It happens to be right around he corner from my house, but tI know some of you might rarely ge tout o this part of town. I’ve converted your pickup slot from the Y to the same time at the new place, but feel free to change it if a different time works for you better now. Lord knows so much has changed just in the four weeks since we’ve seen you last. Here are some things that we’ve all been doing that worked wonderfully at the Y, and we’d like you to keep them up:

  • Don’t arrive at the beginning of your pickup window if you’ve got that flexibility. The time you arrive has no bearing on what items you get, so take your time getting there and that’ll naturally spread things out a bit. Flatten the curve, if you will.
  • I’m bad with faces as it is, and masks make it even harder to recognize you and even hear you when you give your name. Many of you had papers with your name written in big letters we could read through the window, and that is wonderful. If you think to do that same, it’ll make things even smoother.
  • The pickup loop is newt to all of us, and while I think there is plenty of room we don’t want you backing up into Tallassee, so if you arrive faster than we can deliver orders, we may ask you to pull ahead into the loop and circle around.

Here are some general reminders of things that have changed from the before times:

  • If you arrive by bike or on foot, or just want to park in the lot and get out of your car, we’ll have a place for you to walk up.
  • We’ve still got three pickup windows, and it’s totally ok if you come later than the slot you chose
  • We’re not accepting in-person payments unless absolutely necessary. We’ll have a drop box for checks or labelled envelopes of cash, but we greatly prefer Venmo payments to @athenslocallygrown or online payments through a card tied to your account. That last option has a 3% fee, and Venmo is free.
  • We can not accept any recycling just yet
  • We cannot take your own bags or bins out of your car and fill them up
  • If you’d like to go through your items before you leave to make sure you’ve got everything, or that we didn’t mix up people’s items, feel free to pull into the lot and have a look.

I hope everything will go smoothly but since this is new to all of us, there may be some weirdness. Bear with us, and I’m sure we’ll be settled in in no time.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our brand new home on Tallassee Road!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

We have Speckled Pea and Sunflower Microgreens, Revitalizing Bath Salt, Black Hawaiian Salt, and delicious and nutritious Shrubs.

Want to make sure your salad has some texture and taste? Add some microgreens. Delicious sunflower and speckled pea micros will add nutrition to your smoothie, complement or replace your fresh lettuce salad, or garnish a vegetable or meat dish of your choice.

When your day definitely could go better, add a bit of our Revitalizing Bath Salt to your hot water bath and let the day’s troubles evaporate. Our delicious Black Hawaiian Salt adds a delicious, light smokiness to any food, and is also good for you (in moderation).

Try a gut-healthy Ginger-Fig or Wolfberry Mint shrub/tonic for great taste combined with nutritious ingredients. Use them also for a salad dressing.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

I’m restocking perennials as I’m able from the nursery area to the sales area, but I don’t have a lot of them left, so if you’re looking for something in particular, please ask. The astilbes are now out of bloom, and I’ve removed them from the market, but I still have a few if you’d like to add for next year’s shade garden (please request by email). I also still have some native begonias, and have restocked some really nice ferns. And for sun or part sun, the daylilies just coming into bloom cannot be beat. I have a few other nice plants for sunny locations, including Sedum, Shasta Daisy, Stokesia Asters, and others. Please check back weekly for availability.

Coming soon: restocked elderberry bushes and hanging baskets.

(Top, L to R) Daylily Small Pink with Red Throat and Tassel Fern.
(Bottom, L to R) Sedum with Pink Flowers and Shasta Daisy.
All items listed under “Growers”.
