Magney Legacy Ridge Farm:  CSA #17

Dear CSA-ers,

This week’s Preassembled Bag will contain Lovelock, Fennel, Malabar Spinach, Cherry Tomatoes, Mixed Cucumbers, Green Onions, Dill and Basil. Orders may now be placed on the online market at: https://magneyfarm.locallygrown.net/market

Yesterday’s Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year and the official beginning of Summer. From this point onward, daylight hours will grow shorter. This signals the time to produce abundantly for many of our vegetables, particularly eggplants and peppers (which will start gracing the online market in a couple of weeks). As this email is being written some much-needed rain is falling on the farm. Though we utilize water efficient irrigation techniques, there is no substitute for the fresh water that falls from the sky. This time of year, it settles the dust in the air, and everything seems to green up with such vibrance after a good rain. We are thankful.

The beginning of Summer also marks the beginning of planning for Fall and Winter, a task the team will embark upon Monday. It takes a lot of planning to keep an abundant and diverse mixture of vegetables growing, harvested, and available for you through the online market. This process is always some combination of tedious, stressful, and fun. We will dwell on the fun aspect of it though. There are a number of plants we didn’t have the opportunity to grow this Spring that we’re excited to bring back for the Fall, as well as some new ones we want to try. In particular, we’ve heard a lot of feedback lamenting the absence of Bok Choy and Tatsoi from Spring baskets; these are definitely coming back. We’re also going to try for more significant plantings of Cauliflower, Romanesco, and Celery. If you’ve got any suggestions or requests for Fall and Winter vegetables, this is the time to reach out! Seeding begins soon, and believe it or not, these crops will go in the ground at the peak of summer heat in July and August.

You’ve known it was coming, and now it’s here! This week’s featured vegetable is the tomato! You’ve probably heard that the tomato is a fruit, and while that is true, it’s not a very interesting fact because any crop with seeds is technically a fruit (cucumbers, zucchini, peppers- all fruits). What is interesting about tomatoes is their history. Tomatoes come from a very tiny desert region of Central America where the wild plant grows as an unassuming sprawling vine with tiny pea sized berries. At some point prior to recorded history someone walked a handful of these tiny berries to South America, planted the seeds, and began the domestication of one of the world’s most popular vegetables. In the early 1500s, the Spanish conquistadors encountered the Mesoamerican empires growing tomatoes, liked the vegetable, and disseminated the seeds throughout Europe and all the Spanish colonies. Now tomatoes are grown all over the world.

Their history has two important implications on the modern-day cultivation of this crop. The first is that, at heart, the tomato is a desert plant; and the second is that the plant was domesticated from relatively few wild individuals, so it is severely inbred. Summarily, this is why tomatoes are difficult to grow. They have little deep genetic diversity to impart disease resistance, and the humid and rainy conditions of Eastern North America are less than ideal. For this reason all our tomatoes are grown in high tunnels, where we can protect the foliage from overhead water. This simulates their desert climate and helps prevent the maladies they are susceptible to. Eating tomatoes is delicious and healthy. They have lots of Vitamin C and lycopene, which may improve one’s immune system and reduce cardiovascular risks. They are also the basis for tons of recipes. This year, we’re growing two varieties of cherry tomatoes, ‘Sakura’ (round red), and ‘Starlight’ (elongated yellow). We’ve also got a significant planting of ‘Speckled Roman’ (a red and yellow striped, heirloom paste tomato), and trialing 3 heirloom slicers which may be offered sporadically. We hope you enjoy all of them!

As always, we want to thank you for being a part of our farm. It brings us joy to be involved with our community’s growth in both sustainability and food security. Your support makes growing food organically in West Kentucky possible. Thank you.

Sincerely,
The Magney Legacy Ridge Farm Team

Yalaha, FL:  Summer Time Salad Blues

Summer time brings weather not conducive to growing lettuce, celery or kale. We still have a tiny bit but it is about gone.

I do have microgreens and shoots and am testing out growing more stuff and some edible weeds as a summer salad option. If you like Dandelion, bidens alba, and sweet potato leaves as a large portion of your salad, let me know and I’ll work harder on it.

Basil Plants available.

We have lots of Shoots and microgreens available this week and minimal lettuce, kale and celery left.

I’m not bringing in outside stuff this week. If you really want me to bring in the outside stuff you will have to let me know ahead of time so I can make the arrangements to go pick up next week. Currently the timing doesn’t seem to work out that well and I don’t want to pick up extra just in case and not have it get sold.

If you want to place and order and pick up before the standard window, just let me know.

Standard Ordering window below.
Order now through 7 am Friday June 29th for Sat June 20th Pickup, or tell me when you want to pick up, we usually have flexibility.

We Are Flexible, TELL ME if you want to make special arrangements for produce, I am open and willing especially now. I just need to know the day before so I can harvest anything that needs early morning handling and I like to know when to expect people to show up.

Remember to tell me when you want to pick up! (and if I don’t reply to confirm within a day, bump my e-mail or text me 407-342-8515. Though I have cleaned up my e-mail so hopefully I won’t Miss Anyone.)

Sign in to order. https://yalaha.locallygrown.net/market

You have to sign in to see the add to cart button. Then set the number and click the add to cart button on the items you want to buy (it is the little picture right next to the quantity box.) Remember you need to check out before your order will be placed.
Remember to let me know when you want to pick up on Sat or maybe even Friday late afternoon or on Sunday. (If I don’t send you an e-mail confirmation of your order and pick up time, please make sure you checked out and completed your order.)

News From Our Growers:

Welcome Canna Pham Farm: they are a licensed family owned and operated hemp farm right outside of Murfreesboro. We grow, cultivate, harvest, and create all of our own CBD infused products. We offer smokable hemp flower, CBD infused lotions, CBD infused muscle rubs, and consumable CBD oil.

Our crop is tested by the state as well as additional third party testing.

Trinity Rose Oberhasli Dairy Goats: Will not be on the Market this week but will return next week with lots of milk, kefir and cheese.

RnR Farms: We have a bunch of lettuce and we will all Summer, Fall, and Winter! All naturally grown, in the ground, with zero pesticides used. We also have more zucchini, and possibly some chard and kale. And tomatoes and cucumbers are just around the corner!

Carole’s Herbs (CS3 Farm):This week we are spotlighting our cardamom honey, green leaf lettuce, and microgreens.

Cardamom can be used to treat indigestion, gas and constipation. It also lowers high blood pressure while increasing blood circulation – boosting energy and lowering anxiety. Honey contains antioxidants and has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Our soil and sun grown lettuce has Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and a host of minerals (including Magnesium, Manganese, Folate, and Potassium), as well as antioxidants, and it is delicious!

Microgreens have much higher nutrient levels than the full grown veggies, and work well added to smoothies, salads, or baked dishes. Microgreens are a little larger and older than sprouts but not quite as large as the regular vegetable, and they taste great! We have Turnip-Mustard, Speckled Pea, and Sunflower microgreens.

Mama D’s Bakery: Hi everyone! We wanted to say thank you to all of y’all that have been buying our products and continuing to support local businesses! We appreciate it so much!
This week we have added New York style bagels and Cream Cheese Danishes. We hope y’all enjoy them.

Flying S Farms: Jade Green Beans, Yellow Straightneck Squash and Zucchini, Pickling (called Pickling because they are a smaller cucumber great for pickling but also do well in salads) and Slicing Cucumbers (great in salads or dip in your favorite dressing), have been added this week, Red Russian Kale is still coming in and available, great raw in salads, enjoy sauted with other vegetables or by itself.

Look forward seeing you “At the Curb" of Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday June 24th from 5:00 – 6:30pm, please contact me if you are unable to make delivery or are running late, please phone, email or text me so we can make arrangements to get your order to you. If we don’t hear from you, your order will be donated and you will be invoiced for the amount since we still need to pay our Growers for their products. Remember we can deliver it to you if necessary.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

Your shady garden will really benefit from the addition of our hardy begonias, which will begin bloom within a month or so; and our beautiful ferns, including our own Tennessee native Christmas fern. I’m relisting perennials as fast as they grow large enough to sell, but I don’t have a lot of them left. I have several more beautiful daylilies coming into bloom for sun or part sun. And now is a great time to plant that herb garden you’ve been thinking about. Please check back weekly for availability, as I’m running out of several plants.

Coming soon: restocked elderberry bushes and a few late-season bloomers.

(Top, L to R) Hardy Begonia and Daylily Orange with Red Throat.
(Bottom, L to R) Naive Christmas Fern, English Thyme.
All items listed under “Growers”.

FRESH FROM THE GARDEN

ovenfriedokra-0620
This Oven Fried Okra from Life, Love & Good Food is a game changer. We made it with some extra long Cowhorn Okra from Sandy Valley that Scotty asked us to try. I don’t think I can go back to pan fried okra after this.

Who doesn’t love GRILLED VEGETABLES? They’re as easy as slicing, brushing with your favorite oil and throwing them on the grill. Following is a list of great Market veggies (in no particular order) you can make and enjoy without heating up your kitchen.

Creole Red Onions Fairytale Eggplant Danny’s Carrots
Fingerling Red Potatoes Fingerling Tan Potatoes Cowhorn Okra
Japanese Eggplant Nadia Eggplant Cherry Tomatoes
Kinston Sweet Onions Yellow Onions New Red Potatoes
Green Tomatoes Raven Zucchini Tempest Squash
Ripe Tomatoes Zucchini Squash Yellow CrookNeck Squash
Zephyr Squash Yellow Straight Neck Squash
And then there’s so many yummy ways to season them . . .
Flavored Vinegars from Casa Perdido Genovese Basil Flat Leaf Chives
Avalon Garlic Salt Rosemary Avalon Rosemary Salt

Baked-Eggplant-Parmesan-Recipe-1
We recently made Eggplant Parmesan. This recipe incorporates my favorite methods for this by first “sweating” the eggplant then battering with Italian Panko and oven frying. Honestly, you could stop right there and be perfectly happy without the marinara sauce and cheese.

Summer Break Announcement This newsletter starts the first of two ordering cycles before Market at Dothan takes a short Summer Break with the last pickup date July 3. There will be no newsletter on Saturday July 4 and no Market pickup on Friday, July 11. Summer Break gives all our farmers a much needed breather and a chance to plan. We encourage you to order extra of the items you may need during the off week and of course you’re welcome to contact any of our growers directly if needed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you read Product Descriptions? They can be very interesting! We learned this week while listing some of Sandy Valley’s new products that Raven zucchini are high in the antioxidant lutein, and that the Tempest yellow squash was developed for chef quality organic production. How cool is that? It will take some time to go through all 343 listings currently on the Market but go we shall!
GROWER NOTES
We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.
DANNY’S GREENS: Danny is only listing onions and carrots this week. The lettuce is growing much slower now because of the summer heat and needs time to grow to cutting size.
SANDY VALLEY: Scotty is excited to introduce three new products to the Market this week and wants everyone to know that if everything grows right he’ll have plenty of both corn on the cob and watermelons available for your 4th of July celebration.
LAURA’S CONFECTIONS: “Ghirardelli chocolate is dirt!” A familiar face at the Market said this to me a while ago and caught me so off-guard I was struck dumb. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but as someone who takes enormous pride and professionalism in bringing to you my very best efforts and ingredients I was deeply hurt by her opinion. The number of orders I process each week is modest leaving no allowance to purchase ingredients in bulk. I pay retail prices for everything and take special care in evaluating everything included in your orders. The reason I use Ghirardelli chocolate is based on taste, texture, and consistency. Somewhat more expensive it allows me to offer wonderful flavor at a price I believe is within reason. In comparison, Amedei is considered the best chocolate in the world. There are 20 ounces of chocolate in a 9" Triple Chocolate Cheesecake bringing the cost of the chocolate alone to approximately $170.00. Ghirardelli is a very fine baking chocolate I will continue to use until something better comes along at a price I believe is reasonable.
I am on a constant quest challenging myself to learn advanced techniques and bake with the best ingredients at my disposal. I now use aluminum free baking powder and organic, terpeneless citrus extracts. If ever I fill an order you find unsatisfactory, never hesitate to inform me and allow me the opportunity to make things right. I am most thankful and grateful for your constancy, trust and business. Laura King
Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.
II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
